Omega Protein Corporation Environmental Initiatives
Marine Sanitation Devices
Omega P r o t e i n installed new type II MSD’s (Marine Sanitation Device) on every vessel. Vessel engineers were trained to use the MSD’s and Omega unilaterally decided to observe a no discharge zone in the Great Wicomico River including Cockrell Creek, key tributaries near Omega Protein’s Reedville facility. The project cost roughly $600,000.
Additionally, 500 gallon holding tanks were installed on s e l e c t v e s s e l s in non-discharge areas to hold any treated sewage until the boats are in permitted discharging areas; this resulted in added expense of $100,000.
